|Good news: Washington legalizes assisted suicide for the terminally ill
||[Nov. 10th, 2008|12:47 pm]
On the election of November 4th, 2008, the state of Washington has joined the state of Oregon, The Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland, as being among the only places in the world that allow assisted suicide. The right to kill oneself is the most basic, fundamental right that a person can have. Therefore, Washington has joined the ranks of jurisdictions that can be described as 'not utterly evil'.|
As with the legalization of assisted suicide in Oregon, the legalization of assisted suicide in Washington was implemented via ballot initiative. As a general rule, the average politician is more fanatical than the average non-politician, so it figures that these 2 measures would be passed by ballot initiative, not by the legislature. The initiative in Washington was named I-1000, and passed with 59% of the votes- a large margin.
Don't get your hopes up that this marks the beginning of a general expansion of the legalization of assisted suicide. Washington has the largest percentage of people that identify as 'non-religious' in the contiguous 48 states. Therefore, it was only a matter of time before Washington legalized assisted suicide. Oregon also ranks among the top 5 states for highest percentage of non-religious people. Note the geographical adjacency of Washington and Oregon. Those 2 states are part of the same regional gene pool, much like the states of the old south are part of the same regional gene pool.
